Ways to make flash cards
A flash card has a prompt on the front and the answer on the back — a term and its definition, a word and its translation. Printing them means printing on both sides of the paper, which is called double-sided or duplex printing, and the catch is getting each answer to land on the back of its own prompt.
Handwriting index cards costs almost nothing and needs no printer, which is fine for a short personal set; it gets slow and uneven for a big one, and you can't hand copies to a class or replace a lost card. Store-bought decks are worth it for standard subjects like multiplication tables or state capitals, but useless for your own vocabulary list. A screen app like Quizlet or Anki is the better tool for studying alone, since it drills you on a schedule, but it gives you nothing physical for a group game, a table of kids, or a room without devices.
To print your own list, a Word or Docs table printed two-sided works, but lining the backs up with the fronts by hand is fiddly and usually costs a few wasted sheets. Using the free Flash Card Maker
In the box near the top labeled "Term & definition, one pair per line," type the term, a comma, then the definition, one pair per line; a preview shows the fronts as you go. Turn on "Show faint cut guides" if you want lines to cut along. Getting the backs behind the fronts
Whether the answers land behind their prompts comes down to two print settings (double-sided, flipped on the long edge) and printing at full size. Test one sheet before you run the whole set.
- Open the PDF and choose Print.
Double-click the downloaded file, then choose Print (in the File menu, or Ctrl+P on Windows, Cmd+P on a Mac). The window that opens is the print dialog, where the next settings are. - Turn on double-sided printing (duplex).
By default a printer uses only one side of the paper. Look for an option worded "Print on both sides," "Two-sided," or "Duplex," and turn it on so each definition prints on the back of its term. - Set the flip to "long edge."
Turning on two-sided reveals a choice for how the paper flips over: "long edge" or "short edge." This maker's backs are laid out for a long-edge flip, so pick long edge. - Set the size to 100%.
Printers shrink pages a little by default, and if that happens the front and back shrink toward different corners and stop matching. Find the setting called Scale (or Size, or Page Scaling), set it to 100% or "Actual size," and turn off any "Fit to page" option. - Test one sheet at a window.
Print a single sheet and hold it up to the light: each definition should sit directly behind its term and read right-side up. Upside-down backs mean you're on short edge, so switch the flip. - Print the rest and cut.
Cut just inside the faint guide lines, so you trim off the guide and hide any small front-to-back wander.
Long edge vs short edge, in plain terms
"Long edge" flips the sheet the way you turn a page in a book, hinging along its tall side. "Short edge" flips it the way you flip a notepad, hinging along the top. This maker's backs are laid out for the book-style long-edge flip, which is also the usual default. If every definition comes out upside down, your printer is on short edge, so switch it.
If the backs still don't line up
If the definition is on the right card but sits a millimeter or two off center, that's normal: a printer never puts the second side in the exact same spot as the first, and that tiny wander is why you cut just inside the lines. If the backs are consistently and badly off, your printer may pull paper through a different path when it flips automatically, so run it as two passes instead: print all the fronts, put that stack back in the tray, and print the backs, controlling the flip by hand.
Cutting them cleanly
A guillotine paper trimmer gives straighter edges than scissors and lets you stack two or three sheets so every card comes out the same size.
