Treble, bass, or grand
A treble staff carries the higher parts most instruments and voices read. A bass staff carries the lower parts, for left hand, bass instruments, and low voices. A grand staff joins a treble staff over a bass staff with a brace and a connecting barline, the layout piano and keyboard music uses so both hands read together. Pick the one that matches what you are writing.
Staves per page and measure bars
More staves per page fit more music but leave less room above and below each line for stems, lyrics, and chord names; fewer staves give you space to write freely. With measure bars on, each staff is split into four measures with a start and end line, which helps for counting and for tidy exercises. With them off, the staves stay open so you can bar the music yourself.
Printing
Print at 100% or “Actual size” so the staves keep a natural height for handwriting; “Fit to page” shrinks them. Plain paper works for practice, and a slightly heavier sheet takes pencil and eraser well for music you will revise.
