What cardstock is, and what to buy
Cardstock is thick, stiff paper — the kind greeting cards are made of. Its weight is quoted two ways, in pounds (lb) and in gsm (grams per square meter), and for a certificate you want about 80 lb cover, which is 216 gsm: heavy enough to feel like an award, thin enough for a home printer to pull through. On that weight a certificate feels firm and holds itself flat when you hand it over.
You don't always need it. A classroom certificate headed for a backpack and a fridge is fine on ordinary copy paper and far cheaper by the box. At the other end, 100 lb cover feels luxurious but jams most home printers and really needs a copy shop. Pre-printed certificate paper (the sheets that come with a gold border already on them) saves you designing a border, but you're locked into their design and you still have to print your text onto it lined up. Plain matte cardstock with a border from the certificate maker gives you more control for less money, which is the route this guide takes.
Printing the certificate itself
Make the certificate in the free Certificate Maker and print it at 100% ("Actual size"), so the border lands where it should on the page. Everything below is about the paper you print it on, which is what makes it read as an award rather than a handout.
Buying and feeding it without a jam
What goes wrong is the paper jamming, or the certificate coming out looking cheap, and both are avoidable. Buy the right weight, then feed it the gentle way.
- Buy 80 lb cover, about 216 gsm.
It's the sweet spot: substantial without fighting your printer. 65 lb (176 gsm) is a fine, cheaper choice for a big stack. - Match the gsm number, not the pound.
The "lb" rating is measured against different sheet sizes for different paper types, so "80 lb text" and "80 lb cover" feel nothing alike even though the number matches. The gsm number is measured the same way for every paper, so match that. - Check your printer's maximum paper weight.
It's in the manual or on the manufacturer's site under specifications. Most home printers top out near 200 to 220 gsm; heavier needs a copy shop, or expect jams. - Choose matte, not glossy.
Matte is a plain, non-shiny surface; glossy is the shiny, photo-print finish. Matte takes a pen signature, doesn't glare in a photo, and won't crack along a fold. - Feed from the straightest path, a few sheets at a time.
Use the rear tray or the manual-feed slot if your printer has one; the straighter the paper path, the less the printer has to bend a stiff sheet, and bending is what jams it. - Run one sheet before the whole pack.
Heavy paper either goes through cleanly or it doesn't, and it's better to learn that on one sheet than on twenty.
Weight cheat sheet
- 20 lb bond / 75 gsm: standard copy paper.
- 32 lb bond / 120 gsm: "premium" inkjet paper, stiffer but still bendy.
- 65 lb cover / 176 gsm: the lightest thing that feels like cardstock.
- 80 lb cover / 216 gsm: substantial without being stiff.
- 100 lb cover / 270 gsm: heavy and premium, about greeting-card weight.
Inkjet, laser, and the manual-feed slot
The manual-feed slot is a single-sheet opening, usually at the back or front, that sends paper through on a straighter path than the main tray. Past about 220 gsm, inkjet printers (the kind that spray liquid ink) tend to misfeed, and laser printers (the kind that fuse on powder toner with heat) sometimes leave toner that scratches off an edge. That's why the printer's rated maximum matters before you buy 100 lb.
Why ivory over bright white
A warm ivory hides the mismatch between your printer's white and the paper's white that pure bright stock makes obvious. It also photographs a little softer, which matters when the certificate's whole life is a photo on someone's phone. Bright white is fine; ivory is the safer default.
