How the three lines work
The solid top and bottom lines bound each letter, and the dashed midline marks the middle. Short letters like a and e sit between the baseline and the midline; tall letters like h and l reach the top line; letters like g and y drop below the baseline into the next gap. Practicing against the midline is what gives young writers consistent letter height.
Line height and traceable words
One inch suits preschool and kindergarten, where big letters are easier to control. Seven-eighths of an inch fits first grade, and five-eighths suits second and third as handwriting shrinks. Custom lets you set any height in between. Type a name or a short phrase and it prints faintly on every row, sized to the lines, so a child traces the shapes before writing them freehand.
Printing
Print at 100% or “Actual size” so the line height matches the size you chose. Plain paper is fine for daily practice; a slightly heavier sheet holds up to erasing. For very young writers, fewer rows at the largest height leaves more room per letter.
