The whole season, not one holiday

Fall covers a long run — the first cool morning in September through the last leaves in November — and this puzzle spans it without tying itself to Halloween or Thanksgiving. Fifteen autumn words are loaded: leaves, acorn, harvest, hayride, cider. It fits a September bulletin board as well as an October reading corner.

A gentle vocabulary builder

Words like orchard, chestnut, and scarecrow are the kind a young reader meets in a fall picture book but rarely spells out, so hunting for them letter by letter makes them stick. Keep the grid at 15 × 15 on Easy for early grades. For older students, type in the science of the season — chlorophyll, equinox, migration — and switch to Hard so the diagonals stretch them.

Print it for the apple-orchard trip

These travel well on a clipboard for a field trip to a farm or orchard, a quiet task for the bus or the picnic tables. Raise the puzzle count so each child has a different grid of the same words. The answer keys stay together at the end of the PDF for the chaperone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the fall and Halloween word searches?

The fall puzzle uses general autumn words — leaves, harvest, cider, hayride — with no spooky theme, so it suits the whole season and any classroom. The Halloween version is loaded with pumpkins, ghosts, and costumes for October parties.

Can I make it harder for older students?

Yes. Switch the difficulty to Hard to add diagonal and backward words, raise the grid to 18 x 18 or 20 x 20, and type in more advanced seasonal vocabulary. The answer key adjusts automatically.
