Which grid, and what it's for
Graph paper is described by how many squares fit in an inch. Fewer, bigger squares give you room to write inside each cell; more, smaller squares pack in detail. The number is the whole choice.
4 or 5 squares per inch gives large cells — a quarter or a fifth of an inch each. Use it for younger students, quick charts, drafting where you write a number in every square, and any math where big is easier. Five per inch is the common all-purpose default in the US.
8 or 10 squares per inch makes a tight grid for detailed plots, fine graphs, and engineering sketches. Ten per inch lines up with decimal measurement, so each line is a tenth of an inch. It reads as busy up close, which is the point when you need precision.
Beyond square grids, two other layouts do jobs a square grid can't. A dot grid replaces lines with faint dots at the corners — the structure is there when you want it and invisible when you don't, which is why bullet-journal and hand-lettering people prefer it. An isometric grid is a field of 30° triangles for drawing 3D objects — boxes, floor plans, and game maps that need to look three-dimensional without perspective.
Printing your own makes sense when you need it now, need an unusual spacing, or want a specific line color or an unlined margin. A store-bought pad wins when you want many sheets bound together and don't want to feed a printer; a ream of drafting paper is cheap per sheet. For one or two sheets, or a spacing the store doesn't stock, print.
Making it with the free tools

Printing it true to size
The one setting that matters is scale. Everything else is preference.
- Set the print scale to 100%.
In the print dialog — the window that opens when you choose Print — find the box that says Scale and set it to 100%, or choose "Actual size." This is what keeps each square a true fraction of an inch. - Turn off "Fit to page."
Fit-to-page rescales the sheet to dodge the printer's margin, and then an inch on the page is no longer an inch. If your ruler disagrees with the grid, this is why. - Check it with a ruler once.
Measure ten squares of a 10-per-inch sheet; they should span one inch. Do this the first time on a new printer and you can trust it after.
